Synthetic dyes are a very common product in the industry - used for foods, clothes, etc. However, we often overlook the many side effects these dyes have which range from mild to moderate to severe, some aren't even safe for consumption. Our aim is to produce the naturally occurring dye Carthamin Red 26 by transforming bacterial plasmids to carry the genes responsible for the dye production in Safflower. By doing this we will have effectively reproduced a natural dye via bacterial cultures that will prove as a much better alternative to its synthetic counterpart.
